My Final Trip to the Classroom
December 2nd, 2009 by allyrock
After being in a classroom once a week for eight weeks, I have really grown to like the children I have met, and am really going to miss them. Only seeing them once a week it took them a while to really get to know me and trust me enought to ask me questions, but the last couple of weeks they have begun to ask me for help, and I really enjoyed that. I have got to work with all different types of kids, with different strengths and weaknesses and I have enjoyed working with all of them. I am actually really going to miss going to the schools once a week, and I can’t wait till I can do it again.

My Digital Footprint
December 2nd, 2009 by allyrock
When I googled my name and my hometown nothing showed up so I just tried googling my name. When I did this, my blog address showed up, as well as my facebook page. Everything else was just other Ally Rock’s and things that they have done, or things that have the word “rock” in it. So in conclusion, I don’t really have much of a digital footprint at all. I don’t know if I would change this, I haven’t really done anything that would make my footprint larger, but there are some things that I wouldn’t want everybody to see or know, so I don’t really mind that I don’t have much of a digital footprint, I don’t think I would change it.

This is a video from the TED confrence in California, it is quite interesting to see how invloved people from other countries get with their own “American Idol” like reality show. In Afghanistan there is a show called “Afghan Star” the people in this country get so involved with this t.v. show that they go out and campaign for the person they are cheering for. This most likely happens in Canada and the U.S. as well, but it is a big thing in Afghanistan. There is also another show in United Arab Emirates where the contestants have to write and recite their own poems and perform them. I found this video quite interesting. Watch It!

Podcasts
November 4th, 2009 by allyrock
I picked the podcast “Grammer Girl” as my educational podcast. I thought it was be perfect for me because I am an english minor, so I have to take quite a few english classes. After watching the first podcast I realized that I can definately use this podcast a lot. Grammer is kind of a weakness for me and “Grammer Girl” explains things very thouroughly and makes things very easy to understand. I like this podcast a lot. Here is the URL to “Grammer Girl.”

I chose “Stuff They Don’t Want You to Know” as my other podcast. I like watching these kinds of things on TV sometimes so I thought it would be kind of interesting. I like learning things that I wouldn’t normally know and this is exactly what this podcast is. In one episode it talks about chemtrails and how they could control the mind, it’s kind of weird but interesting as well. I would definately recommend this podcast if you want to know weird facts and stuff the URL is..

Class in Australia
October 28th, 2009 by allyrock
Yesterday I had the priviledge to be a guest speaker in a “year 11″ class in Australia. My mentorship teacher from Boston was doing something with this class from Austalia and invited me to join in one day. It sounded like a lot of fun so I did. It was very interesting. I introduced myself first and they proceded on asking me questions, alot of questions. I did my best to answer all of them like what sports we play, how cold it is here, what we do on weekends, what our schools are like, what are homes are like, and many other things. We had a lot of fun talking with each other and I LOVE their accent. We ended up talking for an hour. I told them that I wanted to eventually go to Australia and they couldn’t figure out why. They also asked me about what it was like in university and why it was fun. I told them, and asked them if they were planning on going to university and they all said no which was very surprising to me. They said the nearest university was too far away..3 hours. I found this kind of funny because i know alot of people who live farther then tghat away from home. I live 2 1/2 hours away, but I guess their culture and stuff is just different. Anyways I found this experience so much fun and very interesting, it is so much different there than here, if you ever get the chance to do something like this, i believe you should definately do it.

Bringing a Smile to my Face
October 21st, 2009 by allyrock
I had the opportunity the other day to experience what teachers have been telling me about. The way the children bring a smile to your face and really just make your day. In my school I get to help with a FIOP class which is a special education class. We had an assembly and in this assembly the principal explained that in honor of the olympics he wanted every kid in the school to run one lap around the gym 1 class at a time with a torch made by a couple of the teachers. We took our FIOP class in there and I have never seen 8 kids more happy in my life. With everybody cheering them on they made a lap around the gym with their smile never leaving their face, and it honestly made my day to see them that happy. This made me realize that this is partially what I went into teaching for, and I am so excited to have many more of those amazing days.

Mentorship 2
October 21st, 2009 by allyrock
I am having a really great time reading some student blogs from my mentorship. They have a different topic to write about every day so there is always something new to comment on. At the moment I am still trying to find a good time for me to meet with 2 of my mentorship teachers on skype. It is very difficult because we have very different scheduals and can’t seem to find a time that works for both of us. My other teacher I can’t seem to get ahold of so hopefully I work something out soon with all of them. This is definately my favorite part of ECMP355 it is a lot of fun and very entertaining.

Another New Subscription
October 20th, 2009 by allyrock
Another new blog that I decided to subscribe to is called Reflections on Teaching, by Alice Mercer. I wanted to subscribe to this blog because it looked like it would have alot of ideas and experiences of her teaching career that she would like to share. I really enjoy reading this blog because She keeps everyone updated with what she is doing with all of her students, and I like the ideas that she has to share.
I didn’t know if i would like voicethread at first, it seemed like everything else that we have been joining, but it is pretty cool. You get to see and hear so many people and what they have to share, so I am glad that I signed up on voicethread and I can definately see myself using it in the future.

My First New Subscription
October 20th, 2009 by allyrock
One of the new blogs I have subscribed to is called Treasure Chest of Thoughts by Tammy Gillmore. I subscribed to her blog mainly because she teaches english, which is my minor. I thought it would be interesting to see what she puts on her blog about her teaching, and tools she may use for it. Which is exactly what she puts on her blog, she also talks about different technologies such as twitter and skype, which i find interesting to read.
