Class in Australia
October 28th, 2009 by allyrock
Yesterday I had the priviledge to be a guest speaker in a “year 11″ class in Australia. My mentorship teacher from Boston was doing something with this class from Austalia and invited me to join in one day. It sounded like a lot of fun so I did. It was very interesting. I introduced myself first and they proceded on asking me questions, alot of questions. I did my best to answer all of them like what sports we play, how cold it is here, what we do on weekends, what our schools are like, what are homes are like, and many other things. We had a lot of fun talking with each other and I LOVE their accent. We ended up talking for an hour. I told them that I wanted to eventually go to Australia and they couldn’t figure out why. They also asked me about what it was like in university and why it was fun. I told them, and asked them if they were planning on going to university and they all said no which was very surprising to me. They said the nearest university was too far away..3 hours. I found this kind of funny because i know alot of people who live farther then tghat away from home. I live 2 1/2 hours away, but I guess their culture and stuff is just different. Anyways I found this experience so much fun and very interesting, it is so much different there than here, if you ever get the chance to do something like this, i believe you should definately do it.

Wow, that sounds really interesting Ally! I wish I could do something like that with my mentors. How did you guys deal with the time change? Was it hard to figure out or kind of straight forward?

The time change was so confusing. I was onling at 7pm our time. They were online at 11 am the next day. It was really hard trying to find a time that worked for everyone but luckily it eventually worked out it was a lot of fun.

Guess the teacher nearly always has the last say, but I would like to endorse the students’ remarks. I couldnt work out why they werent working the chat more at the beginning but they were intent on just listening to you and trying to understand your accent.
When it was finished, they asked if they could chat again sometime with you. You did an amazing job, just talking all the time and keeping the conversations going. My students are still a little shy of the microphone.
I also loved it when you were puzzled that they did not want to go to university as that was very motivational for them. Most of our students live on farms or small country towns. There are some smaller universities closer and some of our students have gone on to university and loved their time there as well. Anyway thank you again, Ally, and if ever you have time to talk again, let us know.
It is rather amazing that we do live in your future, that we are often in different days and times, but we still can connect and share both similarities and differences.
